Reinhardt Has Its Way With No. 2 Lawrence Tech (Mich.)

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – More than two weeks off the field didn't slow down No. 1 Reinhardt Sunday afternoon against No. 2 Lawrence Tech (Mich.), as the Eagles used fast starts in both the first and third quarters to separate themselves from the Blue Devils, 19-6.
The hometown team took the field at Shilling Field House and quickly established its style of play en route to a 3-0 record to begin 2021.
"Nice team win today," head coach John Snow said. "Happy with how my guys adapted to an indoor environment and stuck to our game plan. We started strong offensively in the first quarter, hit a little lag in the second, but I challenged the guys at halftime and they really responded in the second half.
"Defensively, we did a really solid job, and I was happy with how we limited Lawrence Tech and played good team defense. We know we have a tough game tomorrow, so hopefully we'll come out with the same intensity."
Reinhardt found the back of the net five times in the first 7:03 of game time, including Dillan Bousquet getting things started with a goal just over 70 seconds into the opening period. Tyler Chavous would earn his first of two scores in a matter of minutes as he, Zane Anderson and Kyle Banks combined to make the score 5-0 at 7:57.
Lawrence Tech was able to get on the board at 4:51 with a man-up score to get back within four tallies and head to the second stanza. Chavous connected again for a 6-1 advantage, but the Blue Devils got back-to-back makes to get within three at 6-3.
Another flood of Eagle goals followed, however, as they hit the back of the cage three times in the final 4:59 before halftime as Conner Mills, Anderson and Gavin Banks seemingly took the outcome into their own hands.
The trio singlehandedly went on an 8-0 run in a 10-minute stretch from right before the break to 9:42 left in the third period to soar out to a 14-3 cushion. The third quarter was the strongest statistically for Reinhardt – with six scores – as the team continued to play hard and then bolted to a 14-point lead (18- 4) in the fourth before taking its foot off the gas.
Anderson led the way offensively with four goals and three assists. Chavous also collected four scores and a pair of dimes.
Additionally, four other teammates gathered at least two goals in the rout, which was all made possible by the constant ball possession by the Eagles thanks to 21-of-28 on faceoffs (JR Sess 17-for-22).
Matt Webb made five saves in nearly 50 minutes of play before giving way to Turner Cho in the net.
A familiar non-conference foe – Madonna (Mich.) – awaits tomorrow afternoon as the Crusaders welcome the nation's top team to town for a 1 p.m. clash.
