Lady Eagles Have Success at Queens
October 9, 2016
Reinhardt's women's cross country team had a meet full of personal-best efforts and a team record Friday as the Lady Eagles ran at the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
Shelby Rengel posted the seventh-fastest time in school history over the 5-kilometer distance as she finished the race in 19:27. She is the second-fastest runner in Reinhardt history at that distance as Leah Derringer holds the six spots ahead of her. Melanie Gerdes and Jazzmine Gonzalez were within a fraction of a second of each other as both finished with a time of 20:56. For Gerdes, it was the 10th-fastest time for a sophomore in school history, while Gonzalez had the ninth-fastest time for a senior.
Jenna Chance ran in a time of 21:02 for the Lady Eagles to be the third-best finisher. Pam Lalo (21:38), Ansley Avera (22:10), Kaylee Rinesmith (22:58), and Anna Mills (23:09) all ran personal-best times for RU.
Reinhardt's top-five finishers averaged a time of 20:48, setting a new school set by the 2005 team that had three individuals who qualified for the NAIA National Championship meet. The Lady Eagles had a time of 1:44:00 as a squad.
"We had an outstanding run by all the ladies to take advantage of ideal conditions and a fast course to reap the rewards of all the hard training they've been putting in," said RU head coach Jordan Turner. "I challenged them to take down the team record time that had stood since 2005 and they answered the call. Shelby ran an exceptional race from halfway to the finish passing a team best 22 runners in the final half of the race. Pam also played a huge part to fill the role of our fifth runner this race."
