Eagles Volleyball Wraps Up Season at SOU for NAIA Nationals Opening-Round
Ashland, Oregon - The Reinhardt women's volleyball team concluded their impressive season with a challenging matchup at Southern Oregon University on Saturday night. Despite a valiant effort, the Eagles were overpowered by the Raiders with a final score of Southern Oregon 3, Reinhardt University 0, during the NAIA 2024 Nationals Opening-Round.
The Eagles faced a strong Southern Oregon team, with set scores reflecting the intense competition: 25-18, 25-12, and 25-17. Throughout the tournament, Reinhardt's athletes displayed determination and skill. Notably, Juliette Baffico led the Eagles with 7 kills, followed by Emma Ponkova with 6 kills. Ashlynn Barnes not only contributed 2 kills but also played a pivotal role with 9 digs and an impressive 25 assists.
On the defensive end, Caroline Curry stood out with 2 blocks, aiding the team's efforts to counter Southern Oregon's strong attacks. The team also saw significant contributions from players like Faith Breitbarth and Breah Watson who each contributed with blocks, and Silvia Aguado who managed to secure 3 aces demonstrating her prowess in serving.
This season was nothing short of spectacular for the Eagles. As runner-ups in the AAC conference tournament and regular season, they not only showcased their talent but also their dedication and teamwork. The season was adorned with accolades, with Ashlynn Barnes receiving the AAC Setter of the Year and a NAIA Player of the Week honor, while Silvia Aguado claimed the Defender and Freshman of the Year titles. Coach Tessa Corrales was rightly awarded Coach of the Year, underlining the strong leadership guiding the team.
The team's commendable performance this season extended to their academics, with 12 players earning a spot on the AAC all-academic team, highlighting their dual commitment to athletics and academics. While the loss in Ashland ends their competitive journey this year, the Reinhardt University Eagles have laid a solid foundation for the next season, with invaluable experience gained at the national level and a roster full of decorated athletes.
