Eagles Split on Two Full Five-Set Matches at Faulkner Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Reinhardt volleyball rebounded nicely after their first tournament of the year, going 1-3 in the Vette City Classic. The Eagles were back in action for the Faulkner Invitational going 1-1 for the day. The Reinhardt team managed to take out Mobile in a 5-game set (3-2; 16-25, 32-30, 21-25, 15-10). They fell short to Faulkner University in another 5-game set (2-3; 25-22, 15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 8-15).

 Game One

The Eagles got off to an early start against the Rams in the first set that finished at 25-16. Reinhardt and a persistent Mobile team went back and forth with every set until Reinhardt shut the Mobile Rams down 15-10 in the fifth set. The Reinhardt team hit .162 overall totaling 58 kills in the entire match. Allison Selway led the offense with 15 kills, hitting a .289. The RU defense also stood strong totaling 96 digs & 18 total blocks. Alma Vasquez Nunez was all over the court with 30 digs, while Kathrine Perrin stood tall at the net, totaling 5 blocks. Maria Cordova tallied in 43 assists along the way.

Game Two:

Reinhardt came out strong against Faulkner in the first set, going on an 8-2 run. This would allow the Eagles the opportunity to clench the first set. Like the match vs Mobile, this game was back and forth between sets. It was evident neither team wanted to let this win go. 

A widespread offense & efficient passing was enough to take the Faulkner Eagles to a fifth set, losing 8-15. Allison Selway led the way in kills (19), Ambria McBride (13), & Caroline Curry (7) also added to a total of 54 kills overall. Maria Cordova put her teammates in great positions with her setting capabilities and tallied 44 assists for the match. On defense, Alma Vazquez Nunez also came up big with 21 digs and added 5 assists.

This Reinhardt volleyball team now looks ahead to the next day of the Faulkner Innovational. On day two, they will be competing against Southeastern at 10 a.m. The eagles will also get another chance at beating William Carey at 2 p.m. after losing to them last weekend at the Vette City Classic (0-3).
