Mountaineers Roll Past Eagles in Sweep
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Reinhardt volleyball was blanked for the first time since the second match of the season against Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), as on Wednesday morning the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon essentially ended the Eagles' run at the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship, presented by Marriott South Sioux City River Front, 3-0, by the count of 18-25,14-25,16-25 in Iowa.
Today's loss also marked the initial occasion all year that the hometown club dropped back-to-back competitions to fall to 33-4, ending Reinhardt's hopes of becoming the first Appalachian Athletic Conference squad to qualify for the round of 16 at the National Championship in history.
"We didn't show up today, and it's my responsibility to have the team able to be up to play," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "So, as disappointed as I am, everyone should put our performance on me. I apologize to the RU faithful for our performance and I truly appreciate the support you give us. All the Glory goes to God."
The Eagles brought more energy to the floor in the opening moments of the contest, as Eastern Oregon and Reinhardt went back and forth – including a long first point of set one – but it began to fade away in the middle portion of the stanza as the Mountaineers pulled away.
The hometown team was unable to get anything going the rest of the way after putting together its worst hitting performance of the year – .053 – after sets of .067, .000 and .085, respectively, with 23 hitting errors and six service miscues (no aces).
Savanna Davis hit .250 and led the way with seven kills. Carlee Baxter had 13 assists and nine digs, while Erinn Marroquin collected 17 digs and nine assists.
Shelby Glawson had three total blocks.
The team hopes to wrap up the 2019 campaign by salvaging the last game of the year tomorrow against Madonna (Mich.) at 11 a.m. EDT.
