SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In one of the most competitive matchups all season long, Reinhardt's historic 2018 season came to a close Thursday night in Iowa after Corban (Ore.) made the plays in crunch time to take three sets from the Eagles – by a combined seven points – to advance to the round of 16 in the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship, presented by Delta Hotels (23-25, 22-25, 24-26).
The Eagles finish the campaign with the most successful season in school history at 35-8.
"Tonight was truly one of the toughest losses I've ever been a part of," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "Corban is another solid team; super-talented girls that fight hard for one another and very well coached. To have a game plan that can beat a team like that and get to the round of 16 and lose due to mistakes on execution of the game plan stings. This will be a loss that stays with me for a while, the kind that will wake me in the middle of the night.
"On a positive note, we showed we can hang and compete with some of the top teams in the country. Our program improved this season and we are loaded with young talent and some solid veterans. Our recruiting class coming in will help us bring some more height and fire power to our offense. Our goal is to get back [to Iowa] and have bigger goals next year."
Reinhardt, who was looking to become the first team in the history of the Appalachian Athletic Conference to earn a spot in the round of 16, opened the competition with a 3-0 lead before the Warriors slowly climbed back into the game for a 10-10 score. Corban would then use a six-point scoring run to open up a 19-12 advantage before the Eagles would respond with five scores in six chances to pull back within two on multiple occasions.
Goodhind and company would even add one more tally to move to 24-23, but the Warriors would claim set one on the very next play.
Corban would jump out to a big advantage in the next stanza, and the Eagles would again have to play catch up from the beginning. The hometown team would show heart and determination to get back within a couple points late in the game before a ball handling error would derail the comeback attempt and result in a 2-0 hole.
Reinhardt found itself in the same exact situation as Wednesday night against The Master's (Calif.) as the club would need to claim three-straight sets to keep its season alive.
The Eagles would net five-consecutive points to go up, 6-3, and hold a small lead all the way until 15-12 before the Warriors would regain the advantage after five scores in-a-row. Reinhardt would swing right back with five points in six chances to get back ahead by two at 20-18. Corban wasn't done either, however, as the squad tied the scoreboard on multiple occasions before watching the opposition move up to set point at 24-22.
The victory wasn't meant to be for the Eagles, as the Warriors stormed back to claim four-consecutive scores, including icing the match on back-to-back blocks to advance to the next round.
Emily Charbonneau earned another double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills – one behind team leader Cheetara Bing.
Charbonneau also collected the team's lone ace, while Carlee Baxter put up another 36 assists and Kelley Adkins registered 18 digs.
Reinhardt has a taste for what the promised land looks like and feels like at the highest level of NAIA volleyball, now the team has to do what it takes to get back and get even further.
