KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Reinhardt Eagles claimed both the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular-season and postseason tournament crown after blanking Milligan (Tenn.), 3-0, in the AAC Championship final on Saturday afternoon by the count of 25-14, 25-21, 25-14.
Reinhardt – under the leadership of the Brian Goodhind regime – continues to climb to uncharted territory as a program, both in record (33-6) and now as tournament champions for the first time in school history.
"At this moment I'm overwhelmed with emotion… It's such a blessing to be the head coach of this program," Goodhind said. "I have amazing young women in this program and a great staff. Every match during this tournament they just got better and if anyone was off for a few plays, others stepped up. I truly mean it when I say, 'This championship run was a complete TEAM effort; from every girl, whether they were in the game or off the court. We will definitely enjoy this accomplishment for the rest of the weekend, and on Monday get back to work as we aren't done yet.
"On to the National Championship Opening Round. I have to give a shout out to all the RU fans, as we have received so much support and love – thank you!! To God goes all the glory, and we are so thankful."
For the second-straight match in the Championship, it was a complete team effort up-and-down the lineup as the Eagles thrived on both sides of the net through the entire contest. They collectively hit .330 combined during the win, and stormed out of the gate with a .379 hitting percentage to take control of the conference battle.
Cheetara Bing again was solid on the offensive end with a team-best 10 kills, as Emily Charbonneau was a close second with nine scores followed by Tessa Colden with seven. Not only was the offense extremely efficient with 41 kills (36 assists by Carlee Baxter) on the day, Reinhardt combined for 12 aces, and were guided by Brianna Baez (4), Colden (3) and Erinn Marroquin (2).
The squad's main threat came in the second set with the Eagles already up, 1-0. The Buffaloes, after watching Reinhardt finish stanza one on a four-point run, found themselves ahead, 10-9, in the middle game. The Eagles reeled off five points in-a-row to take a 14-10 advantage, but Milligan would bounce right back with four-straight of its own to tie the score again.
As they've done all year, however, Reinhardt turned it on when it needed to the most – tallying seven of the next eight points to pull ahead for good at 21-15. The Buffaloes would try to fight all the way back, but it was too late.
The Eagles saw the victory light at the end of the tunnel and soared out to an 11-4 advantage in set three. From there, both teams would go back-and-forth in the middle of the stanza until the No. 1 seed stormed the court with excitement after Shadaisha Summerall and Emily Charbonneau capped off another four-point run with a block on match point.
The 2018 All-AAC Championship Team members for Reinhardt: Bing, Colden and Baxter – who also was named the Most Valuable Player of the event.
