CANTON, Ga. – Reinhardt tennis hit the courts at the BridgeMill Tennis Club for the third-consecutive day on Sunday, and for the first time in the young season, both the men's and women's sides came away victorious after taking down NCAA Division II Bluefield State (W.Va.), 6-1 and 4-1, respectively.
The sixth-ranked Eagles improved to 3-0 on the year after the pairs of Artem Vasheshnikova/Martin Mendoza (6-3) and Pau Pujadas/Federico Gomez (6-4) grabbed the point in doubles play at the first and third lines.
Singles action was just as impressive for the hometown squad as Gomez went 2-0 on the day following his 6-3, 6-0 decision in the No. 5 hole. Jordi Puig Molina made it 3-0 for Reinhardt with his 6-2, 6-4 final in the second spot, and he was followed by Sam Alexander in the four-spot with a 6-3, 6-4 outcome for a 4-0 advantage.
The Big Blue avoided the shutout by taking the match at No. 3 singles, but the Eagles responded with -positive outcomes in the sixth and first spots after Pujadas (7-5, 1-6, 10-5) and Mendoza (1-6, 6-1, 6-2) closed out the day with triumphs.
The women's team (1-2) came out on the right foot and grabbed the 1-0 lead after wins at the top two lines of doubles play thanks to Glauka Carvajal/Ana Rodriguez (6-1) and Stephanie Fernandez/Tayla Kruger (6-0).
Freshman Elise Standing made the home advantage 3-0 at line five, and then Reinhardt improved its lead to 4-0 on Rodriguez's second win of the day, 6-0, 6-4. Bluefield State held off elimination in No. 4 singles, but Fernandez helped the Eagles earn their first win of 2021 after her 6-3, 6-4 final.
The team wraps up February competition with another home bout – this time against Indiana Wesleyan – in a 1:30 p.m. contest on Feb. 26.
