Women's Soccer Secures Third Place in AAC with Union Win
Waleska, GA - Reinhardt University's women's soccer would go into Union, showing everything that had made them so exceptional all season. The Eagles finished their 2024 regular season campaign with a decisive 2-0 win and secured their spot in the AAC postseason tournament.
Early on, their defense had already established a steady control of the game and a comforting place for the midfielders to go under pressure. The midfield maneuvered the ball with the fluidity of water, and up top, Marta Vicente-Arche had already created two goal-scoring chances within the first ten minutes of the game. They were nearly finished by Reese Wise and Belle Seward, respectively, who made good runs into the box. One of the highlights of the game was a meg from Riley Welsh at the 40-yard line, which resulted in a fantastic crossfield ball to Marta Vicente Arche. The deadlock would finally be broken, with 15 minutes left on the clock, as a thunderous shot from Riley Welsh would rebound, only to be found by Reese Wise, who had a true poacher's finish.
The second half was a cooled-down version of the first in terms of shots but not in terms of fouls, as both teams picked up yellows. This late into the season, the tempers can flare. Reagan Horton brought the coolness and composure needed in this game every time the ball crossed into her 18. Classy work from the freshman goalie. The second goal would come from a wonderful pass across the box from Marta Vicente Arche, which Sophie Lopez placed into the bottom corner with the delicate touch of someone putting away a treasured Christmas ornament. 2-0 Reinhardt. A fantastic finish to a wonderful game.
The Eagles will wait to see how the final standings finish out in conference play. They currently sit in third position with a record tied with Milligan. Truett McConnell is in first place with Tennessee Wesleyan just behind them. Reinhardt breaks the tied record with Milligan after winning the head-to-head match-up during the season. The Eagles will find out their opponents soon with tournament games happening this week and Saturday, Nov 2nd. Game sites will be played at the highest seeds for the first rounds.
