Reinhardt Soars Against No. 19 Truett McConnell (Ga.), 3-1
CLEVELAND, Ga. – Reinhardt women's soccer used a trio of first-half goals to establish its lead over No. 19 Truett McConnell (Ga.) and never looked back in a 3-1 victory Wednesday night over the Bears on the road.
It might not have been possible without the effort of goalie Caroline Johnson, who surrendered just one tally and made 11 stops in 90 minutes.
The Eagles (11-2, 11-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC)) now have some cushion at the top of the league standings after coming out on top and winning its 11th-straight conference matchup.
"I am so proud of all of these young women," head coach Andy Kaplan said. "Our team pulled together and competed at a level we had not reached this year. There were so many great performances.
It was definitely a game in which all of our players gave maximum effort and demonstrated a competitive spirit that has me very excited for the postseason."
Ryelyn Wells – from Marta Vicente-Arche – got the hometown squad on the board first off a corner kick in the 17th minute. The offense would continue to pour in goals for Reinhardt with two more scores in the next 16 minutes of action.
Lauren Akemon found the back of the net in what would prove-to-be the match-winning goal at 25:27, and then Sierra Ruetten scored as well (Wells' second-straight assist) to make it 3-0.
The scoreboard remained the same until Truett McConnell finally broke through, despite winning the shot battle, 21-9, at the 77:19 mark.
The Bears also led in corner attempts at 9-2, but their offense wasn't nearly as efficient as Reinhardt's in the battle at TMU Soccer Complex.
Individually, Wells owned five shots in the positive outcome.
The team looks to keep the momentum rolling on Saturday evening against Milligan (Tenn.) at 5 p.m.
