#2 RU Secures the OT WIN at #1 Cumberlands 10-9!!
Williamsburg, KY – #2 RU women's lacrosse battles it out at #1 University of the Cumberlands and pulls out the overtime thriller 10-9 on Thursday night.
The first quarter saw UC get off to a quick start as they were able to net 2 back-to-back goals to take the lead early. However, RU's Anna Marie Gazzo was quick to answer as she scored 2 to tie the game and Mia Griswold gave them a go-ahead goal to put them ahead 3-2. UC was able to get 2 more in the 1st, while RU added 1 more to end the first quarter at 4-4.
Then in the second, RU was able to outscore UC 3-2 to head into halftime with the lead 7-6. The third quarter saw Shelby O'Neil score 2 goals for the Eagles to Cumberlands 1, to put the Eagles up by 2, before heading into the final quarter.
The Patriots of Cumberlands continued to fight back, as they scored 2 unanswered goals in the 4th quarter to tie RU at 9-9, to force the game into overtime play. Then in OT, Reinhardt's Shleby O'Neil, continues to be one of RU's most dominant offensive weapons, nets the game winner with 5 minutes left in OT.
Offensively, Shleby O'Neil and Anna Marie Gazzo led with 3 goals a piece. Macy Fulton added 1 goal and 2 assists, while Mia Griswold had 4 draw controls and picked up 4 ground-balls. Defensively, KC Bragg caused 3 UC turnovers, while Ashley Steele added 2. Finally, Madison Hasty was the winning goalie and recorded 7 saves.
Reinhardt played a steady and dominant game and earned the upset of the #1 team in the nation. They now sit with a 9-1 record overall and are 3-0 in conference play. With only a few regular-season games left, the Eagles will be playing Truett-McConnell at home on Wednesday, March 27th, at 5pm.
