Player, Coach of the Year Highlight Slew of Conference Honors for Women's Lacrosse
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Morgan McGhee is the Player of the Year within the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) after the coaches voted her the best women's lacrosse player in the league for 2021.
Heading into tomorrow's AAC Championship Final with SCAD-Savannah (Ga.), McGhee has tallied 36 goals and dished out 17 assists. Additionally, she has won 54 draw controls, racked up 48 ground balls and caused 18 turnovers for the 10-1 Eagles.
The junior from Marietta, Ga., was also named First Team All-AAC, and was joined in the category by teammates Caroline Copenhaver, Anna-Marie Gazzo and Syd McHale.
The awards for the hometown team didn't stop there, either, as Alana Crowe, Amaya Garner, Shelby Gennaro, Jessie Landers and Brook Villhauer all were tabbed Second Team All-AAC for their efforts on the field.
Additionally, for claiming both the regular-season and postseason titles, Reinhardt head coach Roy Reynolds was selected as the AAC Coach of the Year as well.
The hometown club – who is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA – has won 10-consecutive outings on the year, and has done so in-large part to dominating offensive possession that has prevented the other team from getting the ball.
McGhee and Villhauer have been rock solid on the draw, which has directly correlated to Reinhardt being near the very top of the country in goals scored (243). The Eagles and Ravens of Benedictine (Kan.) have been neck-and-neck in numerous offensive categories, including goals, assists, draw controls and clear percentage.
Defensively, the team is in the top five nationally in goals allowed, and has constantly been one of the best squads in the NAIA with causing turnovers and picking up ground balls.
Opposing offenses are scoring at just a 5.6 goal/game clip against Reinhardt.
