Eagles Soar in Season Opener Against Spartanburg Methodist
Spartanburg, SC - In an exhilarating start to their season, RU Women's Basketball clinched a commanding 84-57 victory over the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist Saturday. The game showcased Reinhardt's dominant play, particularly in the fourth quarter, which cemented their lead and secured the season opener win. The Eagles are coming off a very successful 2023-24 season, where the team won their first-ever NAIA Tournament game. That team graduated several great players with years of experience, so this season has many interested in how the newcomers will, along with the remaining veteran players like Julia Craft and Kiara Simpson. Simpson is starting the season on the injury list, but Craft was active and ready to go.
The Eagles were off to a strong start, leading 42-28 at halftime. This initial lead was further extended in the second half thanks to outstanding performances by several players. Noelle Lavery was the top scorer for Reinhardt with 21 points, complemented by her 10 rebounds and 2 steals. The veteran Craft also made significant contributions with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and leading the team with 3 steals.
Other notable players included I'ziah McCutchins, who added 11 points and 3 steals, and Na'Yel Camper, who was just outside of double-figures with 9 points. She also had 3 boards and 2 steals in the season-opener. Overall team performance in rebounding and defensive plays were key factors in their victory.
After three quarters, the Eagles had a 62-49 advantage on a made three-pointer by Lavery. Lavery is a grad-student transfer from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and, after one game, seems to be a vital scoring piece to solidify Coach Tony Campbell's lineup.
The fourth quarter was particularly pivotal, with Reinhardt aggressively securing their lead and ensuring the Pioneers could not recover. This game sets a promising tone for the Eagles as they move forward in their season.
Mackenzie Franklin led the Eagles in rebounding with 8 total followed close by Lana Van Dyke who had 7.
Looking ahead, the Eagles will face Point University on November 2nd, in the season home-oper. Fans are eager to see if this strong start continues, especially after such a commanding performance. Reinhardt will jump right into conference play early in the season with five AAC matchups coming up in November. It is going to be another exciting season on the hardwood at the Brown!
