RU WBB Comes Up Short in Hard-Fought Battle in AAC Championship VS Pikeville
Kingsport, TN – The Reinhardt women's basketball team competed in the AAC championship on Saturday afternoon versus the University of Pikeville ears. After a very hard fought and competitive match-up, the Eagles ultimately fell 85-79 in double overtime, giving them the 2nd place spot.
The Eagles ended the 1st quarter with the lead of 14-11. Pikeville then played a great quarter as they outscored RU 22-10 giving them the lead of 33-24 heading into halftime. The Eagles came out in the 3rdpunching back as they closed the gap, tying the Bears 46-46 before heading into the 4th. In the 4th, RU and Pikeville matched scoring of 14 a piece resulting in a 6-6 overtime. Finally in the 2OT, the Eagles and Bears points remained close until Pikeville went on a run resulting in RU having to foul. The final score was 85-79, giving the Bears the AAC title.
Ashley Woodroffe played a great game, recording 28 points, while Maria Sanchez Ponce ended the game with 23 points. Tarrah Gibson led in rebounds with 8 and Ty Williams had 7. Due to valiant effort throughout the whole tournament, Ashley Woodroffe and Tarrah Gibson earned All-Tournament team honors.
Although Reinhardt didn't win the title, they have the chance of earning an at-large bid to the NAIA Nationals Tournament. The teams and bracket will be set on Thursday, March 7th.
