Cross Country Starts Season with Success at the Brickyard
Milledgeville, GA - RU Men's and Women's Cross County competed at the 6th Annual GMC Brickyard Invitational (Georgia Military College) on Friday with roaring success from both teams. Both teams have many talented younger classmen anchored by solid leadership from the upperclassmen.
Tom Vincent is one of those upperclassmen, and he showed why he is one of the top runners for Reinhardt, finishing in second position overall with a time of 26:22 in the Men's 8k. The Eagles flooded the top 10 with four runners, and they had eight of the top twenty. Sophomore Braniff Mahoney was right on Vincent's heals finishing in fourth position overall with a time of 26:56. Noah Jones and Will Ort finished out the top 10 in seventh and eighth place for the Eagles. Logan Ray (11th), Jorge Mares (12th), Uriel Guzman (14th), and Benjamin Pearce (16th) were the other Eagles in the meet top twenty!
With such success at the top, the Eagles ran away with the meet team title finishing in first place and setting a tone for the upcoming season.
The Women had just as much success as the men, finishing in second place overall behind NCAA DI opponent Georgia Southern. The talented crop of freshmen helped the Eagles move up the meet final standings. They had six runners in the top twenty-five, led by freshman Rylee Fisher, who placed sixth overall with a time of 22:07 in the Women's 5k. Lily Tullock (13th), Noelle Dawes (19th), Olivia Edwards (20th), Teara Snider (22nd), and Sara James (24th) rounded out the Eagles Top Twenty-Five at the Brickyard.
Both teams faced tough NCAA competition, so their accomplishments should not be overlooked. It is early in the season. However, the showing puts a positive outlook on what is to come in the weeks ahead leading up to the AAC Championship at the end of the season. Next up for the Eagles will be the Georgia College Invitational on September 28th in Milledgeville, GA.
