All-American Jenkins Wins Newberry Open Title
Newberry, SC - Reinhardt Wrestling competed at the Newberry College Open on Sunday with much success from the wrestlers. The Eagles had sixteen wrestlers competing, with two of them getting spots on the podium.
Graduate Student Mike Jenkins took the crown in the 165 weight class. Jenkins won five straight matches - which gave him his first title of the season. Jenkins was able to defeat a few NCAA DI & DII wrestlers along his way to the championship, making the title extra special. Jenkins is shooting for his second NAIA All-American title this season, which will be coming up in the next few weeks.
Also notable was freshman Joabe Araujo, who placed third overall in the 149 weight class. Araujo went 5-1 in his matches to find his way to the third place finish!
Overall, the tournament was a successful road trip for the Eagles, with seven wrestlers placing in the top 8 or higher. Many other younger wrestlers got their taste of a major collegiate wrestling tournament, which should give them good experience for future tournaments.
The Eagles will be extra hyped this week as they prepare for Friday night's dual at #2 Life University. This heated rivalry always brings out the best in the wrestlers. The meet starts at 7 p.m. at Life University.
