Eagles Go 2-0 on the Night with Montreat and Southeastern
Waleska, GA - RU Wrestling hosted their first duals of the season in the Brown Athletic Center on Friday evening with Montreat and Southeastern. The AAC matchup had the Eagles winning decisively over the Cavaliers of Montreat, 47-3, and a tight one with Southeastern 19-17, with the Eagles coming out on top.
In the first dual meet of the night, Montreat saw the might and experience of Coach Jeffrey Bedard's experienced squad. Reinhardt only gave up one match out of the 10 weight classes. Here are the results from the Montreat dual:
• Angel Banda picked up a forfeit at 125.
• Easton Bishop had a technical fall at 133.
• Dawson Bates 8-2 decision win at 139.
• All-American Trevor Burdick pinned his opponent in the first period.
• All-American Matt Jenkins picked up a forfeit at 165.
• Wyatt Higgins pinned his opponent at 174.
• Jonathan Paramore pinned his opponent in the second period at 184.
• Curtis Thomas had a 7-3 decision win at 197.
• Gavin Harper pinned his opponent in the first period.
RU Wins, 47-3
In the second dual of the night, the Eagles would face a tough Southeastern team that made the trip to Waleska from South Florida. Reinhardt lost to the Fire last year down in Florida so they wanted to make a statement against the #3 team in the NAIA. The Eagles currently sit at #13 in the NAIA and feel a little disrespected from their spot in the polls. The best way to take care of this is to beat the team that is ahead of you and the Eagles did just that winning in a close match, 19 to 17.
Angel Banda, Dawson Bates, Devin Griffen, Matt Jenkins, Wyatt Higgins, and Curtis Thomas all picked the important win points for the Eagles in the dual. All the matches were decision wins for the Eagles with the two extra-time match wins by Higgins (174) and Thomas (197).
The Eagles will take these two wins into a tough tournament on Saturday at Life University. The tournament will be a showcase of some of the top wrestlers in the NAIA right now. Although it is early, the Eagles are getting great results as they build up for the AAC Tournament and the NAIA Championships coming up in January and February.
