Matt Jenkins Leads the Way for Eagles at UNC Pembroke Open
Pembroke, NC - RU Wrestling had a successful trip to North Carolina on Sunday competing in the Annual UNC Pembroke Open. All-America Matt Jenkins led the way for the Eagles winning the tournament bracket for the 165 weight class. Jenkins has returned as a graduate student to improve upon his All-American season last year and with tournament wins like this - he is well on his way.
Overall, the Eagles finished in 9th position out of 15 total teams. The team had several 2nd and 3rd-place finishes to help Jenkins with overall team points. Those wrestlers were Angel Banda (125, 2nd), Dawson Bates (149, 2nd), Devin Griffen (157, 2nd), Jonathan Paramore (184, 3rd), and Curtis Thomas (197, 3rd). Head Coach Jeffrey Bedard had this to say about the tournament, "It was a good weekend for our RU Wrestlers, we placed 11 out of the 16 guys. 125- Angel Banda 2nd, 133- Easton Bishop 4th, 149- Dawson Bates 2nd and CJ Shadinger 4th and Pete Evans 5th, 157- Devin Griffen 2nd and Nate Napolitano 6th, 165- Matt Jenkins 1st Champion and Wyatt Higgins 5th, 184- John Paramore 3rd,197- Curtis Thomas 3rd. Looking forward to the GEORGIA Open this coming weekend Nov.12th."
