David Friedberg Wins the National Title in Men's Javelin
Gulf Shores, Ala. - On Wednesday morning, it was time for David Friedberg's event - Men's Javelin Throw. Friedberg had a great outdoor track and field season where he put up great numbers that were competitive in all classifications - NCAA DI, DII, DIII, and the NAIA. On this day, it would not be any different as Friedberg would finish ahead twenty-three of the top competitors in all of the NAIA.
The athletes had six rounds to get their best distance. Friedberg's best came in the third round where he would throw the best distance of the NAIA Championships at 69.99m. The next closest competitor was 65.67m from Oregon Tech's, Jose Ignacio, and 63.91m from Jakob Blatnik from Point Park.
David Friedberg is just a sophomore so we can expect a few more seasons of great numbers and possibly more National Championships for the Eagles Track and Field program in years to come.
This NAIA National Championship is the first individual national title for the Eagles Track and Field program and it is the second in school history. Nolan Saxton was the other as he won the National Championship for his weight class in NAIA Wrestling.
Friedberg's throw is the 3rd best throw in NAIA championship history and is also a school and personal record. Leading up to the NAIA National Championships, Coach Josh White was working with Friedberg daily in the front of the Brown Athletic Center perfecting his throw, and all the time and effort paid off.
Coach Turner was excited about Friedberg's accomplishment and had this to say about the throw, "Thrilled for David to capture our first national championship as a program. He's an extremely hard worker and deserves this title. Coach Josh White has been a tremendous asset to our program and this title is a product of his dedication to doing whatever it takes to help our student-athletes succeed. David rose to the occasion today and now he'll have the title of national champion for a lifetime!"
