LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (Results) The men's and women's indoor track and field squads put their final touches on the 2021 campaign on Friday after both groups impressed at the AAC Championships at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville, Ky.
The men – highlighted by conference champion Jonathan Paolozzi in the weight throw – were able to finish in fifth place out of nine teams with 87 points, while the women grabbed eighth with 19 tallies.
Paolozzi's toss (17.09m) was the second-best throw in the history of the AAC Championships, only behind his own mark of 17.38m from last year's conference meet.
"Great finish to our indoor season for both groups," head coach Jordan Turner said. "Everyone says it right now, but a very different year for our groups, but I'm proud of the perseverance to see this thing to the end of the indoor portion of our schedule. Our indoor schedule was shortened to four meets in 20 days, so to be able to get as many individuals to conference is an amazing feat for this group; many of them got their first opportunity to compete indoors at this meet – which was a challenge in itself – but we came away the second-most all-conference performances in program history from this meet.
"Johnny has had a great indoor campaign and he capped it off with a big win in the weight throw. Hopefully he can get a top-16 spot into nationals and compete against the nation's best. All our all-conference honorees put together a solid event and competed at a high level like they have the last three weeks: Johnny, Andrew, Alex, Donte, Otis, Braden, Robert, David and Brody all led the high-point scores, but we had numerous point scorers inside the top eight. Braden (1K) and Parker and Carly (5K and 3K) doubles all nailed down big PRs over the two days in those events."
Turner also said he was especially proud of the women's team and the multiple point scorers that stepped up the last two days. He added that Javen (three events), Carly, Madison, Jasmin and both the relays all had a hand in scoring the most team points in three years at this meet.
