MILLIGAN, Tenn. – Third-ranked men's tennis bounced back in a big way and No. 21 women's tennis earned back-to-back triumphs after each took down the Buffaloes of Milligan (Tenn.), 7-0 and 4-3, respectively, on Friday.
With the victories, the men's squad improves to 8-1 overall (5-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC)) and the women's team upped its record to 6-5 and 5-3 within the AAC.
The clean sweep for the men's group started with a 3-0 day in doubles as the top line (Martin Mendoza/Artem Vasheshnikova) were victorious, 6-2. The duos of Jordi Puig Molina/Sam Alexander (6-3) and Federico Gomez/Esteban Federico Sued (6-1) also took home wins.
Mendoza (6-1, 6-0) and Vasheshnikova (6-0, 6-4) took the top two singles slots with relative ease. The winning continued on lines three through six, highlighted by Gomez (6-4, 6-2), Alexander (6-2, 6-4) and Masumi Komada (6-1, 6-0).
On the ladies' side of the net, all three doubles matches went to plan as well, as Ana Rodriguez teamed up with Glauka Carvajal for a 6-3 final. Stephanie Fernandez and Tayla Kruger were triumphant in the No. 2 spot with a 6-1 win, and Taylor Nelson tasted victory with Elise Standing (6-0) in the third position.
Fernandez took the top spot in singles play and won, 6-3, 6-1. Her efforts were followed by a victory at line two by Standing at 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 singles was a hard-fought match that went to the Buffaloes (as did the five and six spots), but Majenta Marcinkowski came away with a positive outcome at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
