Reserve Eagles Top Lions in Season Opener
WALESKA, Ga. – In the first men's soccer match since the COVID pandemic, the Reinhardt reserve men's soccer team opened the 2020 season Friday night with an emphatic Appalachian Athletic Conference rivalry win over Bryan (Tenn.), 5-2.
It only took 14 minutes for the Reserve Eagles to hit the back of the net as freshman Andres Jorquera was able to lob the Bryan goalkeeper for the first goal of the season. Jorquera scored once again after receiving a pass from senior Greg Morris to double the Eagles' lead.
Five minutes later, a near-post corner kick by junior winger Dima Lynes connected with the head of senior Arny Brunstein to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Bryan reserves would not go quietly, however, as a converted penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half saw the Lions narrow the deficit to 3-1. The Eagles quickly bounced back with a great individual goal from freshman midfielder Jose Bautista – and with 11 minutes left in the match – senior Sean Dumond converted a penalty kick to make the score 5-1.
The reserve Lions were able to find the back of the net one more time with two minutes remaining, making the final score 5-2 in favor of Reinhardt.
Sophomore goalkeeper Patryk Weber got the start and played the first half for the Eagles as freshman Carlos Guerrero took the second period; his first 45 minutes in a Reinhardt uniform.
Next up on the schedule is an outing against the Gwinnett Soccer Association on Oct. 5.
