JR Sess Scores in Final Minute for Win Over Webber
Waleska, GA - The Eagles are coming off a weekend where they faced the #8 team in Siena Heights and #2 Indiana Tech. They finished the weekend 1-1 but they did not have much time to think about the game as the #10 team in the NAIA, Webber International, was visiting Ken White Field on Tuesday evening.
This one would be an offensive thriller with a total of 29 goals scored between the two teams. The Eagles would come out on top in this game narrowly with the score of 15-14. The Eagles were able to score in the final minute when Brady Hanak found a cutting JR Sess in front of the goal who smashed it in the back of the net for the win. It was a great moment for Sess and RU Lacrosse. Although they won their fifth national championship in a row last year, the team lost a lot of experience and leadership so this is a brand new team finding its identity. Each game is a learning experience and a chance to grow to get to the final goal. Players like Hanak, Sess, and Cameron Cochran - just to name a few - start to emerge as leaders as this season moves on.
The Eagles would have to play catchup to start this game as Webber jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Reinhardt would quickly get 3 goals back to take the lead and finish out the quarter with a 6 to 4 lead. The second quarter would see the Eagles score another 4 goals to the Warriors 3, but it was a message to Reinhardt that Webber had come to play and it was going to be a battle to the very end. The Eagles led at the half 10 to 7.
The second half is where the game would get really exciting because the three-point halftime lead was cut to just two goals at the end of the third and in the fourth quarter - Webber would finally tie the game at 12 all with a lot of time left in the game. The teams would get a few more goals getting the game tied again at 14 each and with one minute on the clock, Hanak would get his best assist of the game to Sess for that final and winning goal.
JR Sess would end up with 6 goals to lead the Eagles in scoring. This was his first time doing that this season. Cameron Cochran would follow with 4 goals of his own to help the Eagles. Brady Hanak and Benji Shackleford had two goals each and Carter Maurice had one goal in the game. Hanak led the team with 4 assists in the game.
Defensively, the team did not have their best game - however - they had their key moments and it was just enough to allow the offense to do their thing and walk away with a win. Ezequiel Ceant was 18 of 31 on face-offs with 14 ground balls.
Jason Marx, Charlie Edwards, and Matt Potvin had many key moments on defense in those final minutes to help secure the win for the Eagles. Potvin caused 3 turnovers and Marx and Edwards had 2 each.
The Eagles will have this weekend off and come back for another home game against Aquinas on Saturday, March 18th. The Eagles extended their season record to 7-1 and 3-0 in the AAC with Tuesday night's victory.
