The Eagles Men's Lacrosse Train Keeps on Rolling
Waleska, GA - Just a little over nine months ago, Eagles Men's Lacrosse was celebrating its FIFTH NAIA National Championship in a row. Players like Dillan Bousquet, Titus Thind, and Fisher Nuss are no longer suiting up for the Eagles, however, they have several star veterans and a few top-notch newcomers that will keep the tradition of RU Lacrosse going for years to come!
Today's game was with NCAA DIII opponent, Oglethorpe University from Atlanta. the Stormy Petrels were coming off a win with Shorter University last weekend and the Eagles had one exhibition game under their belt with Georgia Tech.
The Eagles started their scoring quickly and never let off the gas pedal for the remainder of the game. Benji Shackleford started off the scoring in this home opener getting the first goal of the season five minutes into the game. The Eagles would score five more goals added to Shackleford's goal in the first period and they added another six in the second period to take a 12-0 lead into the halftime break. Carter Maurice had his name on three goals and two assists in the first half as one of the leaders for the Eagles.
The second half would see the game keep the same pace for the Eagles where they would have three goals in the third period and seven in the fourth. Oglethorpe did not get on the board until the fourth period when they scored two goals on the Eagles.
Carter Maurice and Cameron Cochran would lead the Eagles in scoring with 4 goals each. Both had two assists as well in the game. Ethan Lux and Benji Shackleford both had three goals each and Wyatt Maddox, Brady Hanak, and JR Sess each had two goals. Hanak led the way in assists for the Eagles with a total of seven.
Brenden Pecora and Liam Wright split time in goal for the Eagles with each being recorded with a save.
The Eagles will be on the road next weekend with a game with St. Ambrose on Friday, 2 pm - which will be played at Cumberlands. They will play another road game with William Penn at a neutral site in Williamsburg, Kentucky on Sunday, 1 pm. The next home game will be Thursday, February 16th at Ken White Field.
