A Rare Overtime Loss for Eagles Lacrosse
David Finney
West Palm Beach, FL - It would take two overtime periods and home-field advantage to take down the defending National Champions. The Eagles are ranked #1 in the NAIA Coach's poll and they would be taking on the #3 ranked Seahawks of Keiser University.
This game is what you would expect when two top-five teams are playing each other. Both have a rich tradition in Lacrosse and neither wants to give up a loss - especially not to one of your rivals. A game like this could easily be a preview of a national tournament playoff game or even the National Championship game.
Reinhardt would lead this one after the first quarter with goals from Dillan Bousquet, Tyler Wilkinson, and Wyatt Maddox. Bousquet and Wilkinson would both score in the second quarter, however, the Seahawks would tie the game up at six going into the halftime break. The third quarter would see Keiser score four goals to the Eagles three and take a narrow 10-9 lead at the end of three. Matt Potvin and David Hutchinson would get their first goals of the game in the third along with Maddox getting back on the board.
The fourth quarter would almost go scoreless until about one minute left in the game. Keiser would get a goal putting them up by two goals with less than a minute to play. Reinhardt would have to answer fast if they wanted to have a shot at taking this game. Wyatt Maddox would get the Eagles back to within one with about forty seconds left and then Dillan Bousquet would come in clutch scoring with just ten seconds left in the game to tie it at eleven all. The game was headed to overtime just like a heavyweight match between two giants should go.
In the first overtime period, the teams would go scoreless. With the score still tied at eleven, the teams headed into the second overtime period, and about halfway through, the Seahawks were able to put one in the back of the net making it 12-11 with the Eagles going down.
Dillan Bousquet led the Eagles in scoring with 4 goals and Wyatt Maddox added 3 goals. Liam Wright had 10 saves in goal for the Eagles. Cameron Cochran would have 4 assists to lead the Eagles.
It was a tough loss for the Eagles and something that most of them are not used to dealing with. Look for them to rebound when they play the second match in West Palm Beach against Lawrence Tech on Wednesday afternoon. Reinhardt will have another road game this Sunday afternoon. The Eagles will have a home game on Friday, March 25th at Ken White Field.
