#12 Ranked Eagles Get Back on the Winning Track
Valley, AL - The #12 ranked Eagles were ready to get back on the playing field after having last week's game canceled against Cumberland. It has been two weeks since Reinhardt gave up the game to Bethel so they were ready to get back on the field and pick up a much-needed win.
The Eagles were on the road with conference and state rival, Point University, and they would not waste any time showing their dominance and picking up the win, 24-14! It was a good day for both sides of the ball as the offense was able to control the game with more than thirty-three minutes of possession and 278 total plays on offense versus the 223 of Point.
FIRST QUARTER
The first quarter would see the Skyhawks strike first getting a touchdown early. The Eagles received the ball first but had a quick 4 and out and had to punt the ball to Point. Surprisingly, the Skyhawks would have one of their best drives of the game and this was an eye-opener for the Eagles. Reinhardt would not allow another touchdown until one of the final drives of the game for Point.
The Eagles would get on the board midway through the first quarter getting the game back to even. Hunter Arters two-yard pass to Jake Wallace would get the Eagles to seven all. Most of the offense that came in this scoring drive would come from Devyn Collins and Tyress McKey. Collins had 15 yards on two carries and McKey had 28 yards on two carries. Collins also had one reception in the drive for five hards that set up the short touchdown pass to Wallace. The drive started at Reinhardt's 40-yard line and went 60 yards for the touchdown. The first quarter would end with the Eagles and Skyhawks deadlocked at seven. Collins would end up with 61 rushing yards on 17 attempts to lead the Eagles in the game. McKey would be just behind Collins with 46 yards on six plays in the game.
Second Quarter
The defense would step this game and hold Point U. scoreless in the second quarter. The Skyhawks had a time-eating drive to start the second quarter that lasted a little over eight minutes and took 13 plays. They were knocking on the door to get more points, however, the Eagles' defense held strong and stopped a 4th and 7 attempt at the Reinhardt 24-yard line. The Eagles took over at their own 24, but could not do much with the ball and gave the ball right back to Point. A great punt by Reid Schratwieser moved the ball back to Point's own 25-yard line. Each team would trade the ball several more times with no real advancements to end the second quarter scoreless. The game would stay tied going into the halftime break.
Third Quarter
Point would receive the ball first in the second half, but they could not move the ball and gave it right back to the Eagles at the thirteen-minute mark. The key drive of the third quarter would be a 12-play drive by the Eagles that two a little over six minutes off the clock. Arters would get another passing touchdown to David Friedberg. The touchdown was an 11-yard strike to Friedberg and put the Eagles up 14 to 7 at Schratwieser's successful extra point. The play that made the drive keep going was a 26-yard pass from Arters to Cedric Cullars.
After Point got the ball back, the Eagles' defense would hold them once more and give the ball back to Reinhardt's offense with about three minutes remaining in the third. The Eagles would have another long drive that ended the third and went four minutes into the fourth. The Eagles were able to eat a lot of clock and score at the end of the drive. The score was a 26-yard field goal by Reid Schratwieser and this put the Eagles in the driver's seat to finish out the game with a win.
4th Quarter
With the long drive that went from the end of the third straight into the fourth, the Eagles just had to hold Point's offense and then let Collins finish out the game running the ball. The Eagles were able to hold Point on the next drive and put the ball back into the hands of Arters and Collins. The drive would take almost eight minutes off the clock and Collins would touch the ball four times on the six-play drive which resulted in a 13-yard rushing touchdown for Collins. After Schratwies' extra point, the Eagles had a commanding 24 to 7 lead with just six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
A long kickoff return by Point would set up Point for another touchdown in the game and bring the score to 24 to 14 with just three minutes left in the game. After getting the ball back, the Eagles' main goal was to run the clock out at this point, however, Point would hold strong and get the ball with just two minutes left in the game. A long drive by Point would take the ball all the way to the Reinhardt 23-yard line, but the Skyhawks would run out of downs and time as a few passes ended up incomplete.
The Eagles would take over and line up in victory formation to run the clock out and walk away with the 24-14 win, which was their first conference win of the season. All remaining games for the Eagles are conference opponents and they have another matchup with Point again later in October. Next up for the Eagles is another road trip and this time it is against St. Andrews - Saturday, Sept 24h with a 1 pm kickoff.
