Walk-Offs, Complete Games Pitching, Back-to-Back Homers - This Doubleheader Day Had it All
Waleska, GA - With much on the line, Reinhardt Baseball took the field on Saturday afternoon with the task of sweeping the Bryan College Lions in the AAC doubleheader. A lot was riding on the games because the Lions were creeping up on the top three teams in the AAC (Johnson Royals, Tennessee Wesleyan, and the Reinhardt Eagles). The team was able to take care of business, however, game one of the doubleheader had the Eagles on the edge before they came away with the win. Game one ended in 4-3 extra-inning thriller in the Eagles' favor. Game two had a much different feel and the Eagles walked away with the decisive 5-1 victory to sweep the Lions.
Game One
The first game of the day was a rollercoaster ride for Eagles fans. Both teams competed hard for this one because it was the make-or-break game of the series. Tate Dearing took the mound for the Eagles and was able to pitch five-plus innings. He was able to strike out six batters while giving up six hits in his innings. Hunter Paulsen followed Dearing and he had a solid two innings before being pulled in the eighth. Paulsen struck out two batters and only gave up one hit while keeping the Lions off the board.
Brett Allen came in to pitch the final innings, which extended much longer than anyone expected. Allen struck out three batters and only gave up one hit and just like Paulsen - he kept the Lions off the scoreboard. The pitching staff of game one did all they could, which allowed the bats of the Eagles to wake up late and create one of the best comeback wins at Ken White Field.

Offensively, the late inning heroics of Cade Chamlee and Barry Eiseman propelled the Eagles to the great comeback win. In the ninth inning and the score 3-2 in the Lions favor, Chamlee stepped up with two outs and the game on the line. In remarkable fashion, he cranked a fastball over the left-center wall bringint Reinhardt back to equal sending the game to extra innings. It was Chamlee's first homer of the season and could not have halppened at a better time.
The extra innings had a lot of back and forth chances by each team and the game extended to twelve innings. Barry Eiseman was able to get the game winner in the bottom of the twelvth inning with an opposite field home run ending the game 4-3 Eagles. Also homering in the game was Jacob Mantooth who has been on a tear lately and has the chance to hit it out anytime he steps to the plate. Shortstop Robert Phelps had a good game at the plate as well hitting a triple, a double, and scoring a run for the Eagles.
Game Two
Game Two was a totally different game for the Eagles and the previous extra-inning game seemed to rip the wind out of the sail for the visiting Lions. The second game was all Eagles and much of this his credited to the arm of starter Adam Christopher. Christopher pitched every inning of the seven-inning game. He struckout eight batters and only allowed one run which happened late in the game when the game was for the most part decided.
Christopher scattered five hits across his seven innings, which allowed the offense to build a lead and secure the sweep of their AAC opponent.
The offense came from four long balls by the Eagles spread out through the game. Jacob Mantooth got the Eagles on the board early in the game and it was his second home run of the day bringing his season total to ten homers. Barry Eiseman hit his second homer of the day as well adding another run for the Eagles in the fourth.
In the fifth, Louis Dion and Luca Boscarino would seal the deal for the Eagles with back-to-back homers. Dion's shot was a two-run homer that scored Robert Phelps. This put the Eagles up 5-1 giving them a boost going into the final two weeks of the regular season.
The remainder of the season looks like this for the Eagles: One single game versus non-conference opponent Brewton Parker on Tuesday afternoon at Ken White Field. After this, the Eagles will travel to Bluefield for a weekend AAC series in Virginia. The following week, the Eagles will have another out of conference single game at Cumberland (TN) and then they will end their season on Thursday and Friday that week with a home series versus the CIU Rams. Final seeding will take place after this and the AAC Tournament will happen April 29th - May 3rd in Kingsport, TN. More info to come.
