Herbert & Allen Pitch a Shutout Game One Against Midway
Waleska, GA - Reinhardt Baseball played one of the shortest games in a long time at Ken White Field as they came away with the narrow 1-0 win against the visiting Eagles from Midway University (KY). The pitching from both sides was superb, and it was a lone first inning run that would make the difference in the game.
Reinhardt's ace and All-American Andrew Herbert was on the mound, and he picked up right where he left off against Lindsey Wilson last Saturday. Herbert gave the Eagles a solid seven innings ringing up nine Midway batters and scattering five hits.
Brett Allen came in for Herbert in the top of the eighth inning and he was just as solid. Herbert struck out the side in the eighth and picked up another two in the top of the ninth. Allen picked up the save in the game.

The offense came in the first inning when leadoff man, Robert Phelps, was able to cross the plate on a long sac fly created by Adrian Vargas. With all the great pitching in the game, this was all that was needed for the Eagles to pick up their fourth win of the season.
Phelps went 2 for in the game with the run scored. First baseman Nash Crowell went 2 for 2 in the game.
The key play came on the final out and here is how it played out. Brett Allen had two men on base in the top of the ninth with two outs. He was ahead in the count against the Midway batter, 1-2, when an attempted pick off move failed sending the ball against the right field wall. Rightfielder Barry Eiseman got to the ball quickly and through a laser to catcher Ryan Stephens. The Midway runner rounded third base after the overthrown pick off and headed home. Simultaniously, the runner and the ball headed for home plate - but the ball was slightly faster. Stephens made the catch and got his glove on the other side of home plate just as the runner reached out. It was a bang-bang play at the plate and the runner was out giving the Eagles the 1-0 win!
The Eagles will continue the series on Saturday afternoon - 2 pm with game two against Midway. Game three will be Sunday afternoon with first pitch going at noon.
