Waleska, GA - The #11 ranked Reinhardt Eagles were hosting #1 Southeastern University for the weekend series. The doubleheader was scheduled for Friday afternoon when the Eagles came out on top of one of the games. They were able to split with game one going to Southeastern, 19-6, and game two went in favor of the Eagles, 3-1 behind the strong right arm of All-American Andrew Herbert. It was an exciting day of baseball between two top NAIA teams.
Game One
Game one was a tough one for the Eagles and showed them what playing the top team can be like if you do not have your best game going. The Eagles had a solid 5-0 lead through three innings and then the Fire started to chip away at the lead. Southeastern caught the Eagles in the fifth with a four-run inning and then they decided to hit the gas pedal. Over the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings - the Fire scored an additional 13 runs getting them to 19 total in the game.
Ben Medley got the start in game one and pitched very well for four innings, but he had one bad inning in the fifth which opened up the door for the Fire to erase the Eagle's five-run lead. The bullpen came in to try to help, but the tough Fire offense ran right through anyone that the Eagles could put in front of them.
The Eagles had some bright moments early in the game highlighted by a bomb by Luiz Mendoza in the second inning. Mendoza's home run easily cleared the left field wall after making contact off of Southeastern's ace pitcher, Darien Smith. The Eagles were able to score five runs on the Fire, but it was not enough to slow down the powerful lineup of Southeastern.
Game Two
The magnificent pitching performance from All-American Andrew Herbert highlighted game two. The right-hander controlled the Fire lineup making the bad experience of game one go away. Herbert controlled the Southeastern lineup striking out 6 batters and only allowing one run in eight and two-thirds innings. You will not see any better pitching performances like Herbert's game two, which was only the third loss by Southeastern all season long. He showed that he is one of the top pitchers in the NAIA.
Brett Allen came in to get the final out on a strikeout and picked up the save!

The Eagles backed up Herbert's pitching performance by getting runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. Luis Mendoza singled in the fourth inning which scored Nash Crowell. Catcher Matty Maurer hit a solo bomb in the fifth to left center giving the Eagles a 2-0 edge and Jarrett Burney added a little breathing room in the seventh with a nicely placed double to left center field that scored Jamel Rookard.
The story of game two was the performance of Andrew Herbert on the mound, however, the Eagles did what they needed to do to get a solid win against the #1 ranked team in the nation. It will go down as one of the best games at Ken White Baseball Field in the history of Reinhardt Baseball.
The final game of the series and deciding game will be on Saturday with the first pitch happening at noon.
