WALESKA, Ga. – The Eagles and Skyhawks each took a game within the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) on Friday afternoon as No. 17 Reinhardt's win (5-0) was followed up by a 4-1 victory at Ken White Baseball Field.
The hometown club 28-11 (14-8 AAC) earned a blanking in the opener after scoring in three innings offensively, but the bats had trouble connecting in game two in defeat.
"Very frustrating day for us offensively," head coach Jonathan Burton said. "We did not do a very good job adjusting to what they were doing to us on the mound. Our pitching kept us in the game all day, but, unfortunately, we didn't give them much help. Just a tough day for us in all phases.
"We have to put this behind us and win the series tomorrow."
The long ball was the name of the game in the first contest, as Devin Symlar blasted a ball to left for a 2-0 lead in the second. He was then followed up by two teammates, Gianmarco Marcelletti and Albert Mora, who each hit solo bombs on the first pitch of their at-bats in the third frame.
Now in front, 4-0, Symlar earned another RBI on a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the eight for the fifth-and-final run of the game.
Ethan Foley was strong on the mound in a complete-game shutout with two strikeouts and only four hits allowed.
Point was able to finally turn the scoreboard in its favor on a SAC fly in the top of the second for a 1-0 advantage, which was pushed back to even in the third inning on a Jackson Sisk RBI-double down the left-field line.
A groundout and an RBI-double propelled the Skyhawks back in the lead for good – and they added an insurance tally in the fifth on another SAC fly just for good measure.
The Eagles just had no answers for Chase Raines on the mound, as he stayed in control and went seven innings and accumulated a half-dozen strikeouts.
Jacob Profit was able to go 2-for-2 with a walk as the hosts only had three hits.
Daniel Dolensky was inconsistent on the slab in 3.1 innings of work.
The rubber match is tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
