WALESKA, Ga. – It was a tale of two opposites for Reinhardt baseball on Saturday afternoon against No. 21 Bryan (Tenn.), as the 17th-ranked Eagles exploded to a 12-0 win in game one (7 innings), but were held in check in the rubber match of the series, 9-1, by the visitors.
The hometown squad continues to scuffle within Appalachian Athletic Conference competition (1-5) and currently sits at 11-8 overall.
"Difficult day for us and a tough one to put into words as we are not in a good place right now," head coach Jonathan Burton said. "The execution is poor, and we are putting ourselves in bad positions that we aren't getting out of without it costing us games. We have lots to fix, and it needs to start sooner than later. I clearly have not done a good job as a head coach preparing our team."
Game 1 (W, 12-0) (7 innings)
- Reinhardt handed Bryan its first league loss of the year after gathering 13 hits and scoring runs in three innings – most notably the bottom of the sixth (7).
- Xavier Arnette was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs s cored and five RBIs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth.
- Albert Mora was out-front individually with four knocks in the first contest and three runs scored.
- Jarrett Burney, Gianmarco Marcelletti and Jackson Sisk all contributed a pair of RBIs in the win as well.
- On the mound, Ethan Foley got the victory after going seven innings, striking out four and giving up just two hits to the first two Lions of the day.
Game 2 (L, 9-1)
- Roles were reversed in game two of the doubleheader, as Bryan immediately got on the board in the top of the first – then again in the second, fourth and fifth – to steamroll to a series win on the road.
- Before they could blink, the Eagles were trailing, 4-0, after two frames and couldn't stop the bleeding. The deficit continued to grow (6-0 and then, 9-0, after five) and the Lions never looked back.
- Dalton Turnbow doubled to deep right-center field in the bottom of the sixth to help the hosts avoid the shutout as it earned just six hits in the loss.
- Jarrett Burney (2-for-3) was the only hometown member to get multiple connections in the defeat.
- The Eagles used a number of pitchers as Kevin Ross got the loss after going just one inning.
Reinhardt looks to right the ship next weekend at Union (Ky.) in a weekend series that begins March 12 at 1 p.m.
