WALESKA, Ga. – A wild crowd greeted the Reinhardt volleyball team for its first game inside the Brown Athletic Center of 2019 on Thursday night, as the Eagles opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 win over Point (Ga.) (25-16,25-13,25-23).
The triumph moved the hometown team to 6-1 after the fifth-consecutive victory on the young season.
"Tonight, I thought our student section really brought some incredible energy and our girls fed off of it," head coach Brian Goodhind said. "I think it's still early in the season and we saw a lot tonight, as a coaching staff, that we need to continue to work on and clean up. The girls stayed focused for a lot of the evening and executed what they were asked. We recently changed our defense, and for only getting two days of practice with it, I thought they did really well. We had some breakdowns but that's expected when they have only had two practices actually training in it.
Overall, I was happy with our entire team; from the bench to on the court… On to Saturday. To God go all the Glory."
The energy from the stands poured onto the court as the Eagles were able to make quick work of the Skyhawks in the first two sets – surrendering a total of just 29 points in two stanzas combined. In those aforementioned games, Reinhardt hit .286 and .371 respectively as a squad.
Point was able to gather itself in what would prove-to-be the final set of the night as the visitors came out strong with 12 kills. Conversely, the Eagles aided the Skyhawks with eight errors and gifted them an early 4-0 advantage in stanza three. Reinhardt would be able to come back and tie the score at 7-7 – which Point would regain the lead – before the Eagles would reel off four-straight points for another lead at 11-9.
From there on, both teams would battle back and forth before the hometown team would earn three-consecutive tallies to jump ahead, 24-22. The Skyhawks would avoid elimination with one more point, but would fall short on the next play compliments of a kill by Savanna Davis – who led the team with 10 scores.
Carlee Baxter was out front with 22 assists and Erinn Marroquin was also in double-digits with 16. On defense, Shadaisha Summerall and Brittany Taksas had a hand in seven total blocks, while Mar Vives and Tessa Colden had double figures in digs with 13 and 10.
