ATHENS, Tenn. – A solid offensive attack – four goals by four different players – helped Reinhardt women's soccer cruise to its first win of 2020 in a 4-1 rout of Tennessee Wesleyan on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The victory got the Eagles back to .500 on the young season (1-1; 1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC)).
"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Andy Kaplan said. "We spent the last week working hard to improve areas that needed some fine tuning. We played a very solid 90 minutes with all 23 players making a positive contribution. At this early point in our season, I like the way we are playing and see many ways in which we can get even better."
The opening road contest within AAC play proved-to-be a tight one early on as both clubs held their ground until Marta Vicente-Arche broke open the scoring at the 37:12 mark to give her team the early advantage.
The score would remain 1-0 for only a few minutes before Jasmine Usher added to the lead at 44:04 off a double assist from Adriana Garcia and Kalyn Donegan. The scoring momentum carried through to the second period in the 47th-minute compliments of a score from Brianna Smotherman.
The Reinhardt defense continued to shine and hold down the Bulldogs in their own yard, and that tenacity gave the Eagles additional scoring opportunities, leading to Donegan finding the back of the net for a 4-0 lead.
The hosts were able to avoid the shutout with a goal at 79:15 but wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
In total, the visitors outshot Tennessee Wesleyan, 19-11. Garcia (4) and Donegan (3) led the way individually in offensive shots.
Caroline Johnson got the win after five saves and no goals allowed in 83:03.
The hometown team comes back to Waleska on Saturday evening under the lights for Senior Night against Brenau (Ga.) at 7 p.m.
