ATHENS, Tenn. – Reinhardt women's lacrosse hit the road for the first time in 2020 and wasn't fazed one bit, jumping out to a 12-2 halftime lead and rolled to a 16-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) triumph over No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday.
The fifth-ranked Eagles are now 5-1 on the season and moved over .500 once again in AAC play at 2-1.
"We had a huge day on defense with a lot of caused turnovers, interceptions and saves," head coach Roy Reynolds said. "Our offense overcame injuries, and vets and rookies combined for the points we needed… I'm very proud of how we played today."
Eleven players found their way into the scorebook with made shots as the Reinhardt offense was spread throughout the entire roster. The team was guided by three goals from both Morgan McGhee and Sarah Inman, while Amaya Garner added a pair.
The Eagles dominated from the first whistle – opening up a 7-0 advantage in just 10:01 – before they added another goal to their total at 8-0 halfway into the first period. The Bulldogs avoided a first half shutout with a netted shot at 13:52, but the visitors responded in a matter of seconds and then went into the locker room on a 4-1 run and a 12-2 cushion at the break.
McGhee (five ground balls) opened the tally sheet in the second half with another score as Reinhardt posted three of the next four goals for a 12-point lead at 15-3 with just over 12 minutes left in the game. Tennessee Wesleyan would pick up back-to-back scores to get within 10 goals, but Katie Williams put a bow on the action with another made shot with less than two minutes left.
The hometown team scooped up 28 ground balls, and individually, was led by Syd McHale's half-dozen.
Jessica Landers made a couple saves in 30 minutes of action to collect the win in the net.
Reinhardt has a quick turnaround on deck, as Lawrence Tech (Mich.) – who is tied in the national rankings with the hometown squad at fifth overall – comes to Waleska on Monday for a 5 p.m. matchup.
