WALESKA, Ga. – An emotional pregame retirement of late Reinhardt student-athlete and women's lacrosse player Alexis Taylor's jersey set the stage for a hard-fought win for No. 5 Reinhardt against NCAA Division II Shorter (Ga.), as the Eagles blasted the Hawks, 20-3, inside Ken White Field at University Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The hometown team improved to 2-0 with the dominating performance and was aided by a 10-0 lead in less than 20 minutes.
Katie Yarish led the way offensively with six goals and three assists in the win. Morgan McGhee was next in line with three scores and four assists – along with 11 draw controls and a half-dozen ground balls.
Alyssa Klinger and Taylore Hanna both chipped in with a pair of netted shots as well.
"We made some adjustments at the half and overcame a talented Shorter team," lead Eagle Roy Reynolds said. "We got great performances on offense and defense from our freshmen players; some scoring their first goals. Kyra Byrd did a stellar job standing in for all-conference defender Shelby Gennaro… Overall a great day."
An additional seven players found the back of the net for Reinhardt, as the Eagles got back a point from Shorter after the Hawks broke into the scoring column at 7:45 remaining in the first half. Reynolds' group scored three in-a-row to make it 13-1 before the visitors would score again, but then Reinhardt would finish the contest on a 7-1 run to hit 20 goals in back-to-back outings.
The Eagles forced 15 turnovers and scooped up 30 total ground balls.
Jessica Landers got the win as she split time with Erin Benjamin.
Appalachian Athletic Conference play kicks off for Reinhardt on Wednesday with a visit from the Golden Tigers of Brenau (Ga.).
First whistle is slated for 5 p.m.
