Women's Basketball Soars Over Tennessee Wesleyan at Home
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
WALESKA, Ga. – Suffocating defense led to a big, mid-game run as Reinhardt women's basketball flew away from Tennessee Wesleyan in the second and third quarters en route to an 83-48 outcome over the Bulldogs.
The Eagles (5-0) were led by 18 points from Ashton Sutton on 7-for-10 shooting, including a trio of treys, while Amberlee Zeller added 14 points and seven rebounds in the win.
"Really proud of the team tonight, and I thought we had good energy and all-around effort tonight," head coach Toby Wagoner said. "I cannot tell you how much we appreciate how hard our team plays and its focus on improving day by day. TWU is a good, young team that plays hard and is well coached. We already know they will be ready and more than prepared for our contest up there."
A first-quarter lead of 20-13 jumped to almost 30 points after three periods of play thanks to a 44-22 spurt that saw Tennessee Wesleyan net only eight points in the second stanza. The Bulldogs had no answers for the hometown team's defensive schemes all night, as they shot just 31.6 percent and made only one 3-pointer in 21 tries (4.8 percent).
Reinhardt forced 18 turnovers and found itself in good position all night to score easy buckets off Tennessee Wesleyan miscues. The Eagles accumulated 25 assists with their fast-paced attack that kept the visitors on their heels all evening.
Symone Williams (five boards and two steals) was out-front in assists with a half-dozen, while Bethany Headrick added 6 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Off the bench, Darika Chelsey and Torie Williams combined for 17 tallies.
Every player who checked in scored at least two points in the triumph.
The Eagles had 11 offensive rebounds that helped them shoot 47.1 percent.
Reinhardt looks to win back-to-back AAC road games on Saturday afternoon against Kentucky Christian.
Tip is set for 2 p.m.
