Reinhardt Flexes Its Muscles on the Road at Montreat
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
MONTREAT, N.C. – Four players in double-figures and a big offensive outburst in the middle of the game helped women's basketball move to 4-0 on the year after pulling away from the Cavaliers of Montreat (N.C.), 92-68, on the road in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action.
With the win, Reinhardt has claimed four-straight AAC outcomes to begin the season.
"We are definitely happy and thankful to be leaving here with a win," head coach Toby Wagoner said. "The last few days we have been focusing on competing against the game itself. I'm always proud how hard this team competes but I felt like we did some other things better today. We have to keep working hard and trusting in the process to reach our full potential. It was an exciting game to watch and be a part of, no doubt. I thought Coach Lewis had his ladies prepared and ready to go."
The Cavaliers started the game with energy and passion, staying neck-and-neck with the Eagles to a 15-15 tie. The next two quarters, however, would be a different story, as Reinhardt would combine for 57 points and hold its hosts to 34 points in the same time frame.
Ashton Sutton led the way with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including three makes from deep. Joining her in double figures was Catherine Shope (14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals), Bethany Headrick (12) and Symone Williams (11).
As a team, the Eagles connected on 32-of-53 from the floor (60.4 percent), and they were impressive from the free throw line with 22 makes in 27 chances.
Montreat was forced into 18 turnovers in the loss and only hit 2-for-22 from the 3-point line (9.1 percent).
Tennessee Wesleyan is up next on Wednesday, but with the new conference formatting, it is a non-conference matchup at home at 5:30 p.m.
