KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Reinhardt hit the Brickyard Ball Fields in the final contest of the day on Tuesday night against Bryan (Tenn.), and thanks to two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles escaped an upset-minded Lions squad, 3-2, in the AAC Championship Opening Round.
The triumph improved the hometown squad to 38-11, but in postseason play, nothing comes easy for anyone.
"Typically, everyone brings it in tournament play and the end result is all that matters at this point," head coach Jade Geuther said. "Bryan played well on the defensive side and they made a lot of good plays. Kyrstyn had two big hits tonight and Lindsey was outstanding in the circle.
"We're happy to get into the winner's bracket."
The scoring in the pitcher's duel started with Bryan tallying a pair in the top of the second on a sacrifice bunt – which turned into a fielder's choice – and an RBI-double down the right-field line.
Kyrstyn Fisher cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a single, and then came through in the clutch with another RBI in the sixth to even things up at 2-2. Emily Loveless then earned the game-winning hit off the pitcher two batters later.
Lindsey Shepherd got the victory in the center circle after finishing the contest in relief with five innings, three hits allowed and a trio of strikeouts.
Collectively, Reinhardt gathered nine hits. Fisher was 2-for-2 and Alise Hooks was 2-for-3 in the win.
The team is back on the diamond tomorrow against the Bears of Truett McConnell (Ga.) in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
