WALESKA, Ga. – The offense came alive on the diamond just in time to salvage a split for softball against Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday afternoon, as the Bulldogs shut down Reinhardt, 3-0, before the Eagles responded with a 13-5 final score in five innings.
No. 21 Reinhardt dropped its first Appalachian Athletic Conference contest (5-1), but heads into the weekend at 18-10 overall.
"Tennessee Wesleyan is a good team, and after we lost the first one, it became even more important to get the split," head coach Jade Geuther said. "JJ and Ansley have been great for us the past few days and they were both big again today. Collectively, we have to figure out ways to come out better early in games. We've been at it for eight games in four-straight days, so we are going to enjoy a day off before we get back at it and figure that out."
The Eagles scratched across just four hits in the opener and were blanked by stellar Tennessee Wesleyan pitching. The Bulldogs took the lead in the third on an RBI-single, before tripling its advantage in the sixth on an error and a single up the middle.
The hometown team had a couple chances to get back in the game, but couldn't come through with the necessary clutch hit to put pressure on its visitors in the defeat.
The coin flipped to the other side in the rubber match as Reinhardt finally got the bats going and couldn't be stopped. The Eagles soared to victory with 15 hits – four of which came from JJ Trowell – but it all started once again with Tennessee Wesleyan jumping ahead in the top of the second, 1-0, following an error.
Kayla Laukka got the party started with a 2-run homer to the opposite field in the bottom of the second and was followed up by a 2-run double from Emily Draper for a 4-1 lead. A few minutes later after another single, an error and double, the Eagles were ahead, 7-1.
Reinhardt got to double digits in the third on Megan Huss' single and a 2-RBI double from Emily Loveless.
A bases-loaded walk and a 2-RBI single up the middle brought the Bulldogs a three-run response in the top of the fourth, but an RBI-groundout got one back for the Eagles in the bottom of the inning (11-4).
The visitors weren't quite ready to end the game early as they tallied one more run in the fifth, but again, the Eagles responded immediately by scoring on an Emma Adams double before Trowell walked-off with an infield single.
Three other players netted a pair of hits each as all the starters registered at least on knock in the triumph.
Reagen Radke got the victory after 4.2 innings and allowing five hits while striking out three.
The Rams of Bluefield (Va.) next visit Waleska on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
