WALESKA, Ga. – It wasn't easy, but the Reinhardt Eagles were able to claw their way to another pair of victories within the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) on Sunday afternoon, as the hometown team came from behind twice to earn 12-9 and 5-4 wins over St. Andrews (N.C.).
"Wins are nice, but it felt like we got swept today," head coach Jade Geuther said. "We have to play better to consistently win in this league."
No. 21 Reinhardt (17-9, 4-0 AAC) scored in every inning but the seventh in the opening triumph, but had to watch as its 4-0 advantage after two stanzas evaporated thanks to nine runs in the top of the third by the Knights.
The Eagles then found themselves down, 9-4, and began the climb back into the contest with three more tallies – on a 2-RBI triple from Megan Huss and an error – to get within two. In the matter of two at-bats, Reinhardt came all the way back and tied the game at 9-9 after an RBI-double from Witney Bones; who would come home after some nice base running one batter later.
Emily Loveless (3-for-4) cranked the eventual game-winning run on a blast to left on a 2-1 count in the fifth. Two additional runs would come in for good measure in the sixth on singles to give the lead a three-run cushion.
Emma Adams also went 3-for-5 with a trio of RBIs. Huss scored three runs, had two hits and brought in a pair of teammates.
Ansley Byers came in the game in relief and earned a victory following 4.2 innings of play and giving up just two hits and striking out a pair.
Another big frame from St. Andrews (four runs in the third) was followed up by the second comeback of the day by the hometown team after one tally in the third and a foursome in the fourth to win, 5-4.
The Knights got their 4-0 lead on a pair of 2-RBI hits, and Alise Hooks got one back in the bottom of the third on a single to shallow left-center. Loveless and Hooks would then team up for two hits that would bring home two runs each to home plate.
Byers continued into the rubber match and went the whole way for another victory from the circle after eight hits and three earned runs.
The team will now play for the fourth-straight day after moving up an AAC doubleheader with Tennessee Wesleyan to tomorrow afternoon at home at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
