MOBILE, Ala. – The seventh-ranked Rams of Mobile (Ala.) came from behind to steal game one in extra innings on Tuesday against Reinhardt, 4-3, and that momentum carried over into the second outing in a 3-1 sweep in Alabama.
The Eagles are now 12-8 having lost five-straight contests, most of which have been close matchups to high-quality opponents.
"I've been repeating myself during this non-conference season, but you just can't give gifts to top-10 teams and we made some mental errors today in the first game," head coach Jade Geuther said. "Mobile is a really good team and they took advantage of that; but today was definitely better. We're at least heading in the right direction as we move our focus to the AAC."
Mobile got on the board first in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single, but the visitors took the lead with a three-run fifth frame with a pair of RBI-hits and a wild throw from the outfield. Reinhardt would remain in front until the bottom of the sixth – where the Rams tied the contest, 3-3, after a single and a double both brought in runs.
An Eagle runner was left stranded on third base in the top of the eighth, and they would pay the price for not scoring, as the hosts got a bunt down in their half of the frame and walked-off victorious.
All three of Reinhardt's hits and runs came in the top of the fifth.
Ally Andriano gave up four runs in 7.1 innings with four strikeouts.
The Reinhardt bats stayed relatively quiet again in the rubber match as it totaled just three knocks and one tally – a seventh-inning score on a groundout – where the Eagles had chances to tie the game late.
Mobile got a run-scoring single in the first, but the battle was within arm's length until a two-run bottom of the sixth following a single and sacrifice fly.
Again, three individuals registered one hit each in defeat.
Reagen Radke went wire-to-wire in the circle, and surrendered three runs with a trio of Ks.
Appalachian Athletic Conference play opens at Ken White Softball Field on Friday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. with a visit from Point (Ga.).
