WALESKA, Ga. – The 2020 edition of the Reinhardt Invitational completed its first day of competition on Friday as three games were played – with the hometown Eagles going 1-1 – after a 7-6 come-from-behind victory against Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) (8 innings) and a 6-0 defeat against 20th-ranked USC-Beaufort (S.C.).
"We didn't play good softball all day today," head coach Jade Geuther said. "We had too many errors in the first game and went to sleep completely in the second one. Against good teams, you can't play half-effort and half-energy softball and expect to win; so, we're glad to get a split today and I'm looking forward to us showing up better tomorrow."
In the first outing, the Eagles took a 1-0 advantage in the third inning after a lead-off triple and single. The Lions jumped in front in the top of the fourth on a 2-RBI double to left, but their hosts put up a four-spot in the bottom of the frame thanks to four hits and an error.
Highlights included a 2-RBI triple from Megan Huss, who would score on the very next at-bat on a single from Emily Loveless. Then a wild throw capped off the inning with another score and a 5-2 advantage. Before the blink of an eye, however, Freed-Hardeman would tie the game at 5-5 on a pair of doubles.
The pitching staffs would hold the rest of the way as the game used the international tiebreaker in the eighth stanza, and the Lions took advantage early with a score on a sacrifice fly.
A walk and a Loveless groundout to the right-side set the stage for a walk-off win, and Emma Adams blasted a ball over the outfielders for a 2-RBI triple and a 7-6 triumph for the hometown club.
Of the Eagles' nine hits, Adams had a trio and Huss and Loveless each grabbed a pair.
Reagen Radke got the win in the circle in relief after three innings of work and four Ks.
The Sand Sharks improved to 11-1 on the year after blanking Reinhardt by a half-dozen. USC-Beaufort doubled and scored in the first and then blew the battle wide open with four tallies – on three hits – in the top of the third.
The game would move to 6-0 in the top of the sixth while the Eagle bats remained silent and were held to just three knocks.
Loveless had three walks in the defeat.
Due to cold weather conditions in the area Saturday morning, games will begin an hour later at 10 a.m.
Reinhardt (7-3) begins play at Noon against Midway (Ky.).
