Wrestling Shines in Ohio, Jarvis Brings Home Honors
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
CLEVELAND – The second-ranked wrestling team took its talents north to the Ohio Collegiate Open to compete against some of the best student-athletes on the mat across the country regardless of division.
The Eagles held their own against all-comers, including wrestlers from NCAA Division I, as highlighting the hometown team's efforts on Sunday was Nicholas Jarvis. The Moultrie, Ga., native went 3-1 and made the championship match at the heavyweight division before dropping a 6-3 decision to NCAA DI Blake Querio of the University of Michigan.
Before that match, Jarvis earned two falls and a decision to make the final bout.
Head coach Jeff Bedard used this highly-contested event to get his players experience against a wide-variety of talents. Reinhardt had a number of wrestlers participate across the board, and in a number of weight classes.
Koby Milner was able to make the third-place match at 125 pounds and Bryce Davis made the quarterfinals in the 133-pound bracket.
At 141 pounds, Trevor Burdick was in the first-place match and Jody McAlister made the quarterfinals. Curtis Doctor was able to take home third-place honors at 149 with a 7-2 decision. Cole Luallen was fifth overall at 157, while Nolan Saxton was runner-up in the same class.
Continuing through the brackets, Tristan Bozoian and Tate Holmes both made the quarterfinals in his 184-pound competition, and Jacob Henderson did the same at 197 pounds before dropping a narrow decision, 10-9, but would rebound for fifth-place.
Antonio Stewart also placed fifth after a 9-0 major decision at 184.
Not to be outdone, Jarvis of Reinhardt is Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Wrestler of the Week, the league announced Monday.
It's the second-straight honor taken home by a Reinhardt grappler.
