Tennis Performs Well in Unique Doubleheader Sunday
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
ATLANTA/CANTON, Ga. – It was a long Sunday on the courts for Reinhardt tennis after the forecast for the upcoming days looked bleak for getting matches in, so the Eagles performed twice – on the road at SCAD-Atlanta (Ga.) before hosting a nightcap against NCAA Division III Rose-Hulman (Ind.).
The fifth-ranked men's team grabbed victories to remain perfect on the year (3-0) with a pair of 6-1 triumphs, while the ladies rebounded from a 6-1 defeat against the 19th-ranked Bees to earn a win over the Fightin' Engineers, 6-1.
Reinhardt at SCAD-Atlanta
The Eagles dropped No. 1 doubles against the Bees in Atlanta, but rebounded with positive outcomes at the second and third lines compliments of Jordi Puig Molina/Federico Gomez (6-4) and Pau Pujadas/Caio Lopes (6-3).
In singles play, Gomez grabbed another win with 6-2, 6-0 on line three, and Martin Mendoza bounced back in individual competition with a 2-6, 6-4, 13-11 win. Not to be outdone, Sam Alexander also snagged a victory with a 6-3, 6-3. Reinhardt solidified the match but both Pujadas (6-2, 6-1) and Masumi Komada (6-0, 6-1) also beat SCAD-Atlanta.
The women's team snagged a victory in doubles with the No. 3 team of Sofia Guaglianone/Taylor Nelson (6-3), but it would be the Eagles' lone point on the day as the Bees flew to a win after sweeping singles action.
All the matches in doubles were hard-fought, especially at the No. 4 spot, as Sydney Dattilo fell in three with a total of 4-6, 6-3, 8-10.
Reinhardt vs. Rose-Hulman
The hometown team went 2-0 against the Fightin' Engineers after getting back to town and lining up on the courts for the second time on Sunday evening.
Reinhardt soared to a 3-0 lead in doubles competition as the men finished with No. 2 doubles (Jordi Puig Molina/Federico Gomez (6-1)), No. 3 (Pau Pujadas/Caio Lopes (6-1)) and the top-line team (Martin Mendoza/Sam Alexander (6-4)).
With Mendoza being rested for singles play and everyone moving up a line, Gomez stayed perfect in his young Eagle career with a 6-2, 6-1 decision. Rose-Hulman avoided a shutout with a win at No. 3 singles, but Puig Molina went the distance in a 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 outcome. Pujadas was also able to come from behind in a 4-6, 7-6, 10-4 score.
The women's team went into singles play ahead, 2-1, after Glauka Carvajal/Sydney Dattilo (6-2) and Sofia Guaglianone/Taylor Nelson (6-0) won at the top and third spots, respectively.
Carvajal went 2-0 on the evening with a 6-2, 6-0 outcome, and was joined in the winner's circle by No. 2 Majenta Marcinkowski at 6-0, 6-2. The victories continued to roll in with Dattilo (6-3, 6-3) and Nelson (6-1, 6-0) as well.
Both teams are slated to take on the Owls of William Woods (Mo.), but stay tuned for updates as for rain is on deck for Wednesday as well.
Matches are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Lawrenceville, Ga., in neutral site action.
