DEMOREST, Ga. - Aaron Whitten got his club off on the right foot with a pair of goals in a 3-0 season-opening victory on the road at NCAA Division III Piedmont (Ga.) on Saturday evening.
The win puts the Eagles at 1-0 on the year after Whitten found the back of the net at 9:58 of the first half and 64:50 in the second period. The Reinhardt defense would smother the Lions the entire night and add another tally in the 89th minute from Yosr Frej as icing on the cake.
"Early season games provide players with an opportunity to learn and grow through the experience of match play," head coach Joey Johnson said. "There is no substitute for such experience and developing an understanding of what is required to reach our full potential as a team at the collegiate level. I am grateful to PC for the competitive match and their efforts as gracious hosts. I am pleased to start the season on a positive note and look forward to getting back to work on Monday to prepare for a very challenging tournament this week at Reinhardt."
The Eagles dominated in almost every area, outshooting their hosts, 21-5. The defense continued where it left off a season ago by blanking Piedmont and only allowing a pair of shots on-goal all night.
Niko Tzevelekos got the victory after 90 minutes of play and making a pair of stops in the win.
Reinhardt had 11 shots on-goal, including five from Taylor Gray.
Dalton State (Ga.) comes to town for the first game of the RU Invitational on Aug. 29.
Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
