Eagles Flex Their Muscles Against No. 3 Blue Devils
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Third-ranked Lawrence Tech (Mich.) got on the board against No. 1 Reinhardt in the first 27 seconds on Saturday, but wouldn't find the back of the net again until 8:51 left in the game as the Eagles scored 12-consecutive goals to fly away from the Blue Devils, 14-5, on the campus of Keiser (Fla.).
The top-ranked team in the NAIA is now 3-0 on the year after responding to the early deficit with six scores in the first, another five in the second period and four goals in the final quarter.
"Very happy with how the team responded today after the quick turnaround from last night's game," lead Eagle John Snow said. "We were able to jump out early and were really clicking offensively with six goals in the first quarter, which is always nice. Defensively, we played really good team defense, sliding early and often, and Matt Webb was outstanding in the cage. I was also very pleased with backup goalie Turner Cho, who played very well once his name was called.
"There's still a lot of improvements we need to make in regard to faceoffs, ground ball play and our zone offense, but I'm extremely happy to get out of Florida with two very solid wins."
The Blue Devils saw the tables turn right before their very eyes as they were unable to stop the Reinhardt scoring machine once it got going. Tyler Chavous was outstanding with a half-dozen scores in nine shots (eight on-goal) to lead the Eagles. Gavin Banks was next in line with a trio of goals, and Dillan Bousquet also scored twice to go along with his four assists.
The aforementioned trio and the rest of their teammates combined to put up an 11-1 halftime cushion. The scoreboard would stay quiet in the third, but explode again in the final 15 minutes, as both squads combined for seven made attempts.
Chavous gave Reinhardt an 11-goal lead early in the fourth period with the game well out of reach, but Lawrence Tech added four late tallies to inch closer to the Eagles before Carter Gibb ended the day with a score.
Fisher Nuss led the way in ground balls with five of his team's 35 in the win, one in which the Blue Devils had 17 turnovers.
Matt Webb made nine saves and allowed only one goal in 36:41, before Turner Cho finished the contest with six saves of his own.
No. 10 Missouri Valley comes to town on March 11 for a 5 p.m. matchup inside Ken White Field at University Stadium.
