Eagles Hit 14 Treys to Overpower Bluefield (Va.)
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Nearly a month off between basketball games didn't seem to phase the Eagles on Friday night in Tennessee, as they took care of business against Bluefield (Va.) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) battle on a neutral floor in the Show at MeadowView, 84-69.
Reinhardt improved to 4-0 (1-0 AAC) after Moses Jones (9-for-13 (6-for-7 from deep)) and DJ Lampkin (6-of-13 (8-of-8 free throws)) led the way offensively with 24 and 22 points, respectively, to propel the hometown team to victory.
"I'm so proud of our team," head coach Justin Newton said. "We have said at the start of the year that it will take everybody on the roster to be successful; especially in a year like this. All 10 guys contributed in this win against a really good Bluefield team. We really sat down, defended and rebounded the last 12 minutes and it was absolutely because of our player-led team. So many guys hit big shots and made free throws… I'm really happy for them.
"It's our goal to "win the weekend," and now it's time to rest and turn our attention to IU-East. Go Eagles!"
Fourteen treys (14-for-34; 41.2 percent) helped the Eagles match tallies in both the first and second half at 42 apiece, as big shot after big shot fell in the final period to propel them to a 15-point differential at the final buzzer.
The Rams, however, were cold from the 3-point-line with connections on just six of 26 attempts (23.1 percent), and really hurt themselves at the charity stripe by going only 11-for-22.
Not to be outdone individually was Kristian Collins, who hit double figures with 15 points and five rebounds. Jalin Wimberly paced the squad on the glass with 11 boards to go along with seven points and five assists as well.
The Eagles outrebounded the opposition, 47-35, and forced 13 Bluefield turnovers.
The group shot 28-for-65 (43.1 percent) in the win, and eight student-athletes registered points in the scorebook.
The team has a day off before wrapping up the short trip with a matchup against IU-East (Ind.), who is receiving votes in the national poll, on Sunday at Noon.
