Point (Ga.) Takes Over in Second Half in Home Triumph
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
WEST POINT, Ga. – A 10-point halftime lead evaporated over the final 20 minutes of play after the Skyhawks of Point (Ga.) erupted for 52 points in the final period to come from behind and take the season sweep over the Eagles, 77-66, in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
Three Reinhardt student-athletes finished the contest in double figures, led by Dwayne Wilson and his 18 tallies and seven rebounds. Joining him in double-digit scoring was Chris Rogers (17) on 7-of-9 shooting in 11 minutes and Josh Daniels, who collected 14 points, 7 assists and 3 boards on the night.
The visitors were able to use strong shooting and high-energy defense to put the Skyhawks on their heels in the first half and open up a 35-25 advantage as both teams headed for intermission.
Point, however, woke up in a big way following halftime by hitting a stunning 13-of-19 from the floor (68.4 percent) and getting to the free throw line 26 times – making 21 attempts – compared to just 1-for-2 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles, who shot 55.2 percent in the first half and 50.9 percent (29-for-57) for the game, just couldn't keep up with the pace the Skyhawks – and Sae'Quahn Rogers (who had 30 points and 11 rebounds) – put on the floor over the final portion of the matchup.
Conversely, the hometown team was only able to get to the free throw line seven times overall.
Jervon Walker came off the bench and chipped in 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
Reinhardt forced 14 turnovers on the Skyhawks.
The Knights of Kentucky Christian are next on the schedule in Waleska on Saturday at 4 p.m.
