LAURINBURG, N.C. – A poor first half put Reinhardt in too deep of a hole to dig out of against St. Andrews (N.C.) on the road Monday afternoon, as the Knights were able to claim an Appalachian Athletic Conference victory, 82-63.
The Eagles (4-10, 3-6 AAC) connected on just 37.3 percent of their shots from the field, but did make 10 treys – in 25 attempts – as the trio of Jordan Wright (14 points), Dwayne Wilson (12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists) and Blake McIntyre (11 points and three dimes) all scored in double figures to lead the offensive attack.
"We just can't seem to sustain small runs by the other team without it turning into a large one," head coach Justin Newton said. "We have to do a better job of refocusing quickly when things go wrong if we want to turn this thing around, and it has to happen now."
The shots, however, didn't fall at the necessary clip in the first half as Reinhardt surrendered 42 points in the period and found itself trailing by 18 heading into the locker room. The Eagles' lone lead in the contest came in the first minute, 3-2, off a made trey from Wilson.
St. Andrews continuously found the basket and did a lot of damage from deep – 14-of-32 – en route to a 48.3 overall percentage thanks to a 28-for-58 performance.
Reinhardt was also outrebounded by nine, 40-31, which led to additional opportunities for the Knights to get the ball in the basket. The Eagles, however, did pass the ball well on their makes with 16 assists out of their 22 chances, but the hometown squad was also just 9-for-21 from the charity stripe.
Isaac Clay and Jamaan Bailey of St. Andrews combined to put up 50 points, as the duo nailed 12 total 3-pointers in the win.
The Lions of Bryan (Tenn.) start off the new year with a conference clash in Waleska on Jan. 2, 2020 at 7:30 p.m.
