Union
By Mike DeVader, Reinhardt Director of Athletic Communications & Media
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Baseball put itself in position for a clean sweep Saturday against Union (Ky.) on the road, as the Eagles earned a pair of victories – 8-0 and 5-2 – to claim the series victory on the first day over the Bulldogs.
No. 17 Reinhardt is now 13-8 overall and 3-5 inside the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) after pitching took control of the hosts.
"Dan and Parker were great today along with our defense," head coach Jonathan Burton said. "It was nice to see us hit the long ball today and score in bunches. We had some timely hits and timely bunting – plus – base running was much better. This was a good step, but we need to build off this and continue to grow and improve."
Game 1, W (8-0)
- Daniel Dolensky went seven innings and struck out eight while getting run support from Gianmarco Marcelletti and Dalton Turnbow, who connected on a 3-run homer and solo shot on back-to-back pitches in the top of the fourth.
- The Eagles would add more tallies in the second (one), fifth (one) and sixth (two) to bolt out to the 8-0 lead after six innings of action.
- Union, who struggled defensively, also couldn't find answers at the plate after gathering just three hits.
- Reinhardt got RBIs from Jarrett Burney, Marcelletti (3), Turnbow, Xavier Arnette and Devin Symlar.
- Turnbow was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored in the win.
Game 2, W (5-2)
- The Bulldogs got on the board for the first time on Saturday with a pair of runs combined in the first and second frames, but they let the game get back to even in the top of the third after the Eagles touched home plate on an error and a SAC fly.
- Both clubs' bats would go quiet the rest of the way as the rubber match went to extra innings. Albert Mora would then break the game open with a 2-run blast and was followed up by a Jarrett Burney RBI-single.
- Union would try to get back in contention in the bottom of the eighth, but a double play would end the threat and the outing.
- Reinhardt scratched across seven hits, two of which were from Andres Ugarte.
- Parker Miller got the start and went six innings with seven strikeouts before giving way Alex Watkins, who struck out four batters in a pair of frames and was victorious.
The series wraps up tomorrow at Noon as the hometown squad looks for the AAC sweep.
